Apnea - Twice As Many As Originally Thought !
A study appearing in the May issue of the Journal of
the American Medical Association (JAMA) found some
surprising results relating to sleep apnea and sleep-
disordered breathing. More people than
previously thought -- perhaps as many as 16% -- may
suffer from mild to moderately severe sleep-disordered
breathing during their lives. A study conducted by
Dr Redline found that 16% of adult participants having no
documented sleep breathing disorder developed mild to
moderate breathing disorder within a five year
period. The researchers used the apnea hypopnea
index (AHI) in which an AHI of at least 10 was considered
to be mild to moderate. "This means that there
are more factors involved in sleep apnea than doctors
originally thought" Dr Redline says. This high
incidence of sleep apnea found in this study indicates
that everyone should be aware of the possibility of this
disorder, even if they don't suffer from it
now. Health
